A description is given of a neutron diffractometer which was specially adapted for investigations of amorphous structures. Diffraction patterns that were obtained for vitreous silica were treated by means of inverse Fourier transforms and their radial distribution functions RDF were found. Because the first 2 RDF peaks were well separated, it was possible to obtain the effective coordination number of the closest neighboring atoms and to construct, theoretically, further individual peaks at higher R-values.
