Abstract:
Experiments with solid spheres with diameters of 316 in. to 1416 in. and specific gravities in the range of 1.14 to 14.95 gmcc, falling in distilled water at 20 - 24 C were carried out. With the aid of a stereophotographic-strobe technique, the time resolved, three dimensional trajectory of each sphere was recorded. Analysis of the trajectories revealed the existance of horizontal oscillations of a falling sphere, with amplitude and wave length depending to some extent on the Reynolds number. Author
