LOW TEMPERATURE ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF POTASSIUM.

The adiabatic elastic constants of single crystal potassium were measured as a function of temperature from 195 K to 4.2 K by the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. The measured elastic constants at 4.2 K in units of 10 to the 10th power dyn-cm 2 are as follows C 2.86, C 0.377, C sub n 6.65, and B sub s 3.66. The shear constants C and C are interpreted in terms of Fuchs electrostatic contribution to the shear stiffnesses of the alkali metals. Significantly, this work yields an elastic anisotropy, CC, at 4.2 K which is in agreement with Fuchs theoretical calculation. The results are also compared to Benders values of the elastic constants at 83 K and with Swensons isothermal compressional data.
