Abstract:

Present capabilities for predicting upper atmosphere conditions are reviewed briefly. The principal prediction methods are contrasted with the methods of forecasting employed in tropospheric meteorology. Standard model atmospheres can be considered analogous to synoptic weather maps, but the principal tools of the upper atmosphere forecaster are indices of solar activity, resulting in basic differences of approach. True synoptic analysis of the upper atmosphere above the mesopause is still in the future, but significant progress is being made toward this objective. Author
