Abstract:

It is suggested that bioengineering has arisen as a separate discipline because of educational deficiencies in the fields of biology and engineering. If so, it would seem necessary to provide the bioengineering student with the best possible foundation in the primarily mathematical tools of system analysis, followed by engineering material currently in use in biological work, and a theoretical and practical study of mathematical models in physiology, coupled with thesis work in this last area.
