Abstract:

Cell unbalance and its effect on battery performance is discussed. This cell unbalance results from overcharging and reverse charging overdischarge of individual cells. The effects of these problems on premature battery failure are included. Techniques for circumventing these problems are outlined. A technique employing a zener diode for charge and overcharge control is presented in detail. Coupled with this zener diode is a high forward conductance germanium diode for overdischarge protection. Test data obtained using this diode technique on a three cell sealed nickel-cadmium battery is presented, and this data is compared to similar cells operating under the same conditions. The advantages and disadvantages of the diode technique are discussed and compared with other techniques of cell control. Projected battery weights using the diode equalizer system are discussed.
