Abstract:

The stellar intensity interferometer at Narrabri Observatory is described and its advantages compared to former interferometers. The intensity interferometer is capable of measuring the angular sizes of stars much smaller, hotter, and further away than those measured by other systems. Its advantages are that there is no need for high mechanical precision either in constructing it or guiding it on a star it does not seem significantly affected by atmospheric scintillation and measurements are objective and independent of the observers skill. Development, installation, and initial testing are discussed, and a short theoretical explanation is presented. Author
