Abstract:

As a step towards a definitive solution of the collision efficiency problem of two spheres falling in a viscous medium, L. M. Hockings unpublished Ph.D. thesis University of London, 1958 is examined. The resulting infinite sets of equations that must be solved for the forces on the spheres are found to be correct. This Memorandum shows, however, that Hockings solution of these equations have large errors if the spheres are close together. A suitable method for solving the equations is developed, as in a procedure for accurately determining the errors. Author
