Abstract:

The report discusses the types and causes of defects in transverse test bars. The quality of the bars was improved by using a chromium plated steel pattern, fine grained sand, horizontal ramming of the mold, and horizontal pouring followed immediately by setting the casting in the vertical position. A rapid, accurate, and inexpensive transverse testing technique was developed using an extensometer dial anchored to the testing machine ram with the dial pin in contact with a rigid reference bar. Problems encountered in judging the strength of a casting are described in a study of the effect of the size and location of tensile specimens. Author
