As the initial phase in the study of the active material of the plates of the lead-acid cell, the formulas of the compounds basic sulfates formed between PbO and PbSO4 were checked or established. The phase diagram for the melts of these substances shows formation of the compounds PbSO4.4PbO, PbSO4.2PbO, and PbSO4.PbO. A wet method of preparation leads to formation of the compounds PbSO4.4PbO, PbSO4.PbO, and a hydrous compound tentatively assigned the formula PbSO4. 3PbO.H2O. X-ray methods of analysis support these formulas. X-ray diffraction patterns were recorded for these compounds for use in identification work. The nature of the thermal decomposition products of PbSO4.2PbO and the hydrous compound were determined by X-ray analysis to be a mixture of PbSO4.4PbO and PbSO4.PbO in each case. Author
