Abstract:

A critical review was made of some of the major theories of stress- corrosion cracking, with particular reference to the long-standing question of whether a single, generalized mechanism exists. It is concluded, largely on the basis of recent studies of alpha-brass and of aged aluminum alloys, that several different mechanisms are in fact operative in different systems, so that stress- corrosion cracking must be regarded as a generic term. Consideration is given to areas which require further study.
