A test of physical fitness was carried out on 1243 persons at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. The test consisted essentially of the determination of the pulse rate before and 2 minutes after a standardized exercise. The exercise, stepping up on a stool 18 inch high every two seconds, was maintained for 80 seconds in the case of subjects below 36 years of age and 60 seconds for those above. The results were analyzed statistically. Conclusion On the basis of the test under consideration it is impossible adequately to separate the fit from the unfit and it is recommended that the test be altered until the simplest adequate test of cardio-respiratory fitness is found.
