Abstract:

The proposed specification sets forth some of the requirements for an artificial heart to be implanted in the chest. Functional requirements of output pressures and flows and venous pressure and load responses are described. The hemolytic limitations believed to be adequate for indefinite pumping are stated together with the general requirements for packaging to meet the unique environment imposed on the heart. A statistical acceptance technique is proposed for determining the life and reliability of the heart prior to implantation. Feasibility of achieving certain of the proposed requirements is illustrated by experiences gained during the developing of an extracorporeal blood pump called the Army Artificial Heart Pump. The functional validity of the specification is further demonstrated by a prototype fluid-amplifiercontrolled artificial heart designed according to the requirements set forth herein and implanted in calves.
