The United States Weather Bureau in co-operation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has undertaken a program directed toward the development of a Satellite Infrared Spectrometer SIRS. The spectrometer will accurately measure the intensity of radiation from the earth and its atmosphere in seven spectral bands. The infrared radiation data will be used to determine atmospheric temperatures at various altitudes. The Phase II portion of the program involved the design, development, and testing of three Satellite Infrared Spectrometers suitable for use in balloon-borne high altitude tests.
