A test program was conducted to develop a new means of inactivation of munition components by means of cooling to cryogenic temperatures. The cooling medium used was liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -320 deg F. Three fuze assemblies the M562, the M524, the M509 and their elements were tested. While some success was achieved with the mechanical elements of timing fuzes M562 and M524, where almost 90 were rendered immobilized, liquid nitrogen had little effect on detonator sensitivity, piezo electric crystals, and carbon bridge type electric detonators.
