An analytic and experimental study was made of the factors influencing dendritic structure, microsegregation and porosity in aluminum-base alloys produced under various growth conditions. Apparatus designed for controlled ingot solidification was used to study a interrupted solidification, b programmed solidification, c unidirectional solidification, d solidification under vibration, e liquid metal feeding of solidification shrinkage, and f slow solidification with high local temperature gradient Grain Refinement Probe.
