Abstract:

The Boltzmann equation was solved by Nordsiecks Monte Carlo method for the case of translational relaxation of a gas of elastic spheres whose initial velocity distribution function is given. The Mach number describes the relative separation of the two peaks of the bimodal distribution function and therefore controls the degree of initial departure from equilibrium. Calculations were made for M 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 6, which includes a range of initial conditions from very close to very far from thermal equilibrium. It was also shown that in a Krook model of our relaxation process, the ratio of the two collision numbers is somewhat smaller than two late in the relaxation and approaches two asymptotically.
