Abstract:

A new procedure for optimizing the performance of pulse-width-modulated systems is given for plants which may be nonlinear and time-varying. A modified Bolza performance index is employed. The optimization is formulated as a multiple-arc problem of the calculus of variations. Necessary conditions for optimal control are given in the form of a nonlinear two-point boundary value problem. The method of steepest descent is applied to obtain numerical solutions. A computational procedure is found which is especially suited to this type of problem. Special features of the procedure are automatic step size adjustment, and the generation of a sequence of performance indices which is monotonic.
