Abstract:

Cooling curves of Fe-Ni alloys 1-10Ni quenched at rates up to 60 000 degCs, reveal two transformation mechanisms the lower-temperature mechanism is shown, by the criterion of shape change, to be martensitic. The measured Ms temperatures do not agree with the experiments or calculations of previous investigators. In all but the 10 alloy, the higher-temperature transformation believed to be the massive transformation occurs about 50 degC above Ms. The critical cooling rate to produce a martensitic product decreases from about 30 000 degCs in the 1Ni alloy to 15 000 degCs in the 7 alloy.
