Task I. Additional testing of an iridium ionizer showed an ionization efficiency for thallium of 3.7 depending markedly on ambient pressure at lower temperatures. Attempts were made to deposit higher work function coatings on tantalum, but the deposits did not adhere. Other possible methods of ionizing a thallium beam have been studied. Task II. Tests on an X-band model of a proposed thallium waveguide structure showed the necessity for adequate mode suppression in order to use the coaxial design. Further, the extension of the bare quartz inner cylinder in a region of high electric field in the ends of the cavity appears to be unsatisfactory. Calculations were made on the perturbation caused by putting the cylinder at the electric field null of a cavity operating in the TE021 mode. Task III. A prototype quadrupole magnet is under construction. Author
