Abstract:

A study was made of the propagation of pressure impulses approximately 0.1 micron sec wide in liquids exhibiting viscous absorption, i.e., constant alphasq omega and relaxation effects. Computed variations of impulse shape as a function of path length are obtained by solving numerically the appropriate linearized wave equations. These are compared with experimental data obtained in such liquids as carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, and acetic and propionic acids. Significant differences are noted in the variation of shape and the veocity of propagation of the impulse maximum in the two types of media. Author
