A 4-electron decarboxylative oxidation is reported. A probable reaction mechanism for the case of phenylacetic acid is presented which involves the nucleophilic rather than electrophilic attack of the alpha position of a carboxylic acid. The results of reactions of anhydrides and acids with pyridine N-oxide are given in a table.
