Abstract:

It is shown that the mode characteristics of a general class of open interferometers - Fabry-Perot resonators with flat mirrors of arbitrary aperture shape separated by the distance L can be determined in the high frequency limit by the solution of a two dimensional problem of a scalar field defined in the plane of a mirror, satisfying the helmholtz equation del squared 2DkiLf O, and the impedance boundary condition at the edge of the mirror ff i sq-root3kexp-i pi2L. The eigenvalues D are simply related to the complex resonant frequencies from which one obtains the diffraction losses and phase shifts. The derivation of an impedance problem is a generalization of a similar result previously obtained for the special case of parallel strip interferometers. Author
