The research project described sets up three separate experimental approaches designed to answer the following basic questions concerning the electrical conductivity of proteins in the solid state A What are the charge carriers in dry proteins, electronic or ionic. B What are the charge carriers in hydrated proteins, electronic or ionic. C How does the hydration state of the protein determine the magnitude of the semiconduction process. D What is the sign of the predominant charge carriers. E What is the mobility of the charge carriers. F What is the temperature dependence of the charge carrier density.
