In a recent paper Girardeau derived a variational principle for the Helmholtz free energy which is the classical analog of a quantal principle introduced by Bogolubov. The purpose of this note is to point out that the Bogolubov principle is simply a particular form of the well-known fundamental variational principle first derived for the classical case by Gibbs in his book on statistical mechanics in 1901.
