Abstract:

Adult rabbits continuously infused intravenously with 5 dextrose were given 30 mg per kg of decaborane dissolved in 4 ml of corn oil intraperitoneally. After 20 minutes methylene blue 7 mg per kg was given in 5 dextrose over a 60-minute period followed by an infusion of dilute methylene blue for 47 hours. All of the animals treated with methylene blue as described above lived longer than 24 hours and half lived longer than 48 hours. All of the untreated rabbits died in less than 24 hours. Since the high energy fuel decaborane is a potent reducing agent, it seems likely that the oxidizing capacity of methylene blue accounts for its effect. It is suggested that this form of therapy would be more useful than previous empirical treatment of boron hydride toxicity. Author
