Abstract:

The magnetic properties of the normal cubic spinels MnV2O4 and CoV2O4 are investigated by neutron diffraction techniques. The magnetic diffraction pattern obtained from MnV2O4 suggests a Yafet-Kittel canting of the ionic moments, which are found to have the values of 4.5 microns sub beta and 1.2 microns sub beta for the manganese and vanadium ions, respectively. These results are in reasonable agreement with Plumiers findings. The diffraction pattern from CoV2O4 suggests a Neel configuration with moments of 2.9 microns sub beta and 0.8 microns sub beta for the cobalt and vanadium ions, respectively. However, indications of a high-field magnetic susceptibility require that alternative models be considered. It is shown that reasonable agreement with our data can be obtained on the basis of at least two special arrangements of canted moments. By virtue of recent theoretical developments, these experimental results show that neither MnV2O4 nor CoV2O4 can be adequately described by the nearestneighbour Heisenberg approximation. This effect is attributed to the importance of orbital degeneracy and spinorbit coupling in connection with the V3 ions. Some other consequences of these additional factors are considered. Author
