Abstract:

The yields of the two capture gamma rays in the O16 p, gamma reaction have been measured at 90 deg to the beam for bombarding energies in the range 2.56-2.76 MeV. An anomaly was observed in the yield of the capture gamma ray leading to the 0.500 MeV 12 state of F17. No anomaly was observed in the yield of the capture gamma ray leading to the 52 ground state of F17. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with theoretical calculations made on the basis of the extranuclear capture model of Christy and Duck. On the basis of the experimental results and these calculations, the single-particle reduced widths for the 12 0.500 MeV state and the 52 ground state of F17 were determined. These single-particle reduced widths were found to be 0.570.10 and 0.380.08, where the definition of Lane was used. From the shape of the anomaly observed in the yield of the capture gamma ray leading to the 12 state and the extranuclear calculations, an upper limit was placed upon the width of the gamma ray transition leading from the resonant 12- state at 3.10 MeV to the 120.500 MeV state. This limit was 0.03 eV. Author
