The swimming of a fish is investigated, using as a model a thin, waving plate in two-dimensional, inviscid flow. The solution is essentially an extension of the study of oscillating aerofoils, and is found by replacing the body with a vortex sheet and calculating the flow field. The thrust, lift, required power, and propulsive efficiency are calculated for specific cases and the thrust compared with experimental results.
