Abstract:

The maximum outer-fiber stresses of simply supported rectangular beams subjected to a concentrated load at mid-span for various span-to-depth ratios were determined utilizing the Wilson-Stokes theory. It was found that at the elastic limit of the load-deflection curve, the maximum outer fiber longitudinal compressive stress of the unnotched Charpy specimen correlated well with the uniaxial tension test yield stress data. Also, the yield loads determined from the limit of the linear load-deflection curves of the notched Charpy specimens were found to be essentially equivalent to the unnotched Charpy yield-load data. Finally, it is shown that it is possible to calculate from uniaxial tension test data the maximum bending load of an unnotched centrally loaded, simply supported beam, provided the exponential relationships of stress and strain and the Wilson-Stokes theory are used.
