The basic magnetogasdynamic equations are solved by two methods. In one the calculations are based on linearized equations, the propagation of plane waves being studied in a medium at rest. In the other the theory of characteristics is applied to more general perturbations. Both methods are shown to yield consistent results proving the existence of fast and slow magnetoacoustic waves.
