Abstract:
The purpose of this program is to determine the presence and magnitude of residual stresses in thick wall fiberglas structures, and their effect on material properties such that, the information will be applicable to full size deep submergence structures, and detrimental effects may be minimized or eliminated. Analyses of residual radial and circumferential stresses are compared and reported for 14 dispersed construction cylinders and 32 all hoop scaling rings. Test and theory are compared relative to bending stiffness of the cylinders and to provide insight as to the relative importance of the fabrication effects which influence the final residual stresses.
