Abstract:
Earlier work by the authors had shown that atropine, in doses sufficient to alter the resting EEG and arrest reaction, also altered classical conditioned responses i.e., affected behavior. The current report deals with other anticholinergics, a cholinesterase, and a sympathomimetic. Scopolamine and benactyzine exerted effects similar to atropine. Eserine, when administered by itself, altered both the EEG and conditioned responses but, when administered to monkeys pretreated with an anticholinergic, it caused the EEG to return to normal and restored conditioned relfexes. Amphetamine given to monkeys pretreated with an anticholinergic did not alter the anticholinergic EEG pattern, but did restore the conditioned response. The authors propose a possible explanation for the differing effects between the cholinergic and sympathomimetic drugs. Author
