Abstract:

Tantalum surfaces were examined both immersed in the electrolyte and dry. The optical constants of the metal and of the oxide were obtained by comparing experimental and theoretical ellipsometer curves. It was found that the method of estimating the optical constants of the metal by neglecting the effects of the oxide film already present before anodization leads to serious error. The ellipsometric method gave results in agreement with those obtained using light polarized in the plane of incidence. The advantages of the method seem to lie in the investigation of films which are too thin or otherwise unsuitable for the spectrophotometric method, and for in situ measurements. Author
