Abstract:

Results showed that X-irradiation has an effect on the rapidly labelled RNA II fraction of thymocyte nucleoli, but this was found only 3-4 hours after irradiation, at which time an appreciable number 40 of the cells show morphological degeneration. The loss of s-RNA and monoribonucleotides is possibly a permeability effect resulting from the degeneration of the cell, although the m-RNA component of the s-RNA may also be reduced due to decreased synthesis in the nucleolus. No effects were noticed in Ehrlich ascites cells, although under these conditions the cells suffered mitotic delay and loss of proliferative capacity. After this dose of X-irradiation, no other changes were found in RNA fractions in ascites cells that could account for the observed cytological effects, or the reversal of these effects by the prior administration of RNA to irradiated cell cultures reported by other workers.
