Abstract:

A concordance was prepared for machine-processed Russian text, showing the syntactic governors of prepositional phrases when the word preceding the preposition was a noun P-1N. The concordance showed that under this condition, Russian prepositions strongly tend to serve either an adnominal function or an adverbial function. These properties are not inherent in the individual prepositions, but are environmentally determined. The resultant grouping of prepositions is presented as information that can be used in a program for sentence-structure determination. Author
