The effort was directed toward the production of machine-coated film of free-radical photographic materials suitable for the reproduction of high-acuity continuoustone reconnaissance negatives through several generations. Satisfactory machine-coatings, approximately 9-12 inches wide in 1000-foot lengths, were made of the DPA blueimage formulation and of the SQD-177 black-image photosystem. With these films, fourth-generation prints with near-unity contrast and gamma were achieved from aerial negatives of high, medium, or low contrast. Gammatonal response was controlled by variation of the spectral quality of the exposing light and exposure time. Author
