Progress is being made in perfecting the proposed single pulse method to a point where it can be employed to obtain the admittance-frequency curve for assorted materials without combustion in this initial phase of the study. A spark is used to generate a weak shock wave which becomes planar in its travel down a long tube of rectangular cross section. At the end of the tube the wave meets the surface of the solid being tested and is reflected back up the tube. A transducer flushmounted in the tube picks up the pressure-time profiles of the incident and reflected waves. This information in the form of photographs of the oscilloscope traces is used in the machine calcution of the complex acoustic admittance.
