The equation for the lifting problem of a finite-aspectratio, thin, jet-flap hydrofoil in unbounded flow is considered and certain of its important properties are derived. Previous approximate and analog solutions of this equation are then briefly reviewed. An analytical approach to the low-aspect-ratio case is initiated by applying the well-known Jones approximation to a hydrofoil with jet flap. A solution is obtained and the results compared with analog solutions and existing limiting cases. Deficiencies of this approximation are immediately apparent, especially for a deflected jet singular blowing and a rectangular planform. As a result, the improved low-aspect-ratio theory of H. R. Lawrence is extended to include a jet flap. The corresponding equation is derived and its behavior is investigated with respect to the important properties of the exact equation. Finally, a tentative procedure for solving this equation is advanced and discussed. Author
