Abstract:

The first and second vibrational levels of the Br-Br molecule have been measured directly for the first time in the liquid state. The beryllium filter technique of neutron inelastic scattering was employed to excite the vibrational levels and measure their energy. Low intensities of scattered neutrons were encountered because of the large mass of the bromine atom, and a special correction technique had to be devised to remove the effect of the quartz container necessary to hold this reactive liquid. The bromine molecule appears to retain its individuality in the liquid state as evidenced by the close agreement of the vibrational energy values found in this experiment 0.0401 ev and 0.0836 ev with those found by others from infrared studies on the gaseous state.
