Abstract:

A Fortran computer program was created to analyze the transient heat flow situation which results on arc melting a 3 12-inch diameter molybdenum ingot in a water-cooled copper mold. The effects of several process variables on the time varient ingot temperature distribution were then investigated. The numerical analysis indicated that a finer grain structure can be achieved when the power input is maximized and that the use of maximum power and warm 200 - 400C coolants should result in greater metal purification.
