A conceptual model is proposed for the use in the application of human engineering principles and techniques to the design of instructional systems. The trainee and instructor are viewed as operators within an information system. To illustrate this model and its application, examples are drawn from the literature and from current research on instructional systems. A preliminary human engineering guide is outlined which presents factors critical to design decisions for instructional systems. The model and guide attempt to counteract current tendencies toward premature standardization of instructional system structure, and to bring instructional system development into the main stream of the applied science of human engineering.
