The considerations involved in the development of models of buildings for use in the study of mass fires and fire spread are examined. It is demonstrated 1 that scaling laws apply to actual models of structures as well as to wood cribs and 2 that the effect of wall and roof openings, interior walls, fuel thickness and weight on burning rates can be established. A 38-in. by 1-14in. electronic model has been developed with control circuitry that can be used repeatedly in multiple units to determine the effect of building construction and size, spacing between buildings, terrain, wind and burning intensity on fire spread in specific situations.
