An investigation of the effect of a dipole-like magnetic field on heat transfer to a forward stagnation point in a Mach 3 Argon plasma has led to a surprising result. Rather than indicating a change in heat transfer coefficient, the measurements point to a change in the flow field of such a nature that the effective recovery temperature of the gas at the stagnation point is reduced. This effect is much larger than that which present continuum theory predicts, is dependent on conditions upstream of the test section and is also a function of magnetic field direction. Author
