Abstract:

The technique of matrix isolation has been used to obtain the infrared spectra of several high temperature molecules. A double boiler and reaction oven type Knudsen cell technique have been added to the general methods of matrix isolation resulting in greater versatility of the method. Differentiation between monomer and polymer spectra appears to be entirely possible. The following molecules have been studied MgF2, AlF3, Li2F2, ThO2, ThO, ZrO2 and ZrO. In most cases tentative frequency assignments have been made and structural properties inferred. Atomic resonance line absorption studies have been carried out on HfB2, TiN and ZrN. Heats of formation have been obtained based on the observed vapor pressures.
