The problem of the measurement of ionospheric parameters, particularly under unusual or extreme conditions, has been approached by means of a unique in situ probe system consisting of a Thermal Equalization probe to measure the potential of the carrier platform a Pulse probe to measure the electron concentration and energy distribution and a Langmuir probe to measure positive ion temperatures. In addition, the requisite support systems including telemetry and flight vehicles have been developed. The entire system has been proven by flight tests. Author
