Abstract:

The hexacarbonyls of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten react with the tritertiary arsine, bisodimethylarsinophenylmethyl arsine, TTAS, I to form stable tri-carbonyl metal M complexes of the type MCO3TTAS. The action of halogens upon these complexes was investigated. Two gram atoms of bromine or iodine are consumed per mole of complex yielding salts of the type MCO3TTASXX, in which the metal atom is presumably seven-coordinate. The stability of these salts in solution decreases in the order M W Mo Cr the tungsten II complex is fairly inert, losing carbon monoxide only very slowly whereas the molybdenum II compound loses one mole of carbon monoxide on warming in methanol to form the non-electrolyte species MoCO2TTASX2o. The chromium II complex readily undergoes further oxidation with complete loss of carbon monoxide to form complexes of the type CrTTASX3 where X Br and I the trichloro- complex was made by a different procedure.
