Abstract:

Water in the atmosphere of Venus, discovered by Moore and Ross in November 1959 with a balloon-telescope system provided under prior support, was confirmed and measured far more precisely in February 1964 with an automatic unmanned system provided by the subject contract. These scientific results are presented. The original telescope system, and the automatic one into which it was transformed under the subject contract, are described. The optical and instrumental developments that have made automatic balloon astronomy feasible are described. A new balloon launching procedure is described. Work planned for the future is mentioned, including a ground-based use for the new telescope. Author
