Abstract:

This report presents a theoretical discussion of the effect of nonequilibrium quantities of free radicals on the ignition delay in the hydrogen-air system. A correlation was found between the ignition delay computed from complete reaction kinetics and the initial rate of the reaction O2 H OH O. A rate equation is derived in which a modified expression for the total free radical content is substituted for the H concentration. The implications of non-equilibrium amounts of free radicals on the testing and operation of high velocity combustion systems are discussed.
