Abstract:

A basic limitation to the calculation of Fourier transforms and system functions was investigated. It is demonstrated that much of the past difficulty must reside in the inadequateness of the approximation when an insufficient number of data points are employed. There is reason to believe that the number of points should be about ten times as great as has been customary. Where between 100 and 200 points have been considered adequate, at least 1000 points should be used. Expressions were obtained for the error in using approximate forms for exact integrals for the Fourier transform.. It is possible in any specific instance to calculate the error and to make good estimates of how well the approximation fits the exact solution. It is also possible to determine whether a particular expression can be tested against experimentally derived data. Author
